ROBOT - SOCCER WITH - MIABOTS
Merlin Intelligent Autonomous Robots

We demand ever more of our machines, and increasingly we want them to work with us and around us. This raises a number of fundamental questions:

  • How do robots cope when they are not tethered to their human creators?
  • How can we get robots to perform tasks useful to us?
  • How can we get robots to co-operate with other robots to perform a single task?

MIABOTS are miniature, fully autonomous robots, which are ideally suited to explore such questions. Each Miabot contains a drive-train, on-board power source, radio link, computer and sensors in a small 8cm Cubed modular chassis.

MIABOTS are already used by around the world for R&D. In Europe they are commonly used for Robot Soccer competitions.

 

The following universities/colleges have robot soccer teams:

  • University of Plymouth
  • Open University
  • University of Wales Newport
  • University of Salford
  • Moray College (Elgin Scotland)
  • Strathclyde University
  • Sabanci University (Istanbul/Turkey)

The Merlin Systems Corp. Ltd robot soccer team won the Technogames 2000 championships.The specification of the robot can be found here

 
Each MIABOT is supplied with the following:

NIMH Battery packs
Modular Aluminum Case
MIABOT control board
Drive Train
Software development kit available via download

You will need to purchase or make your own program cable (instructions available)
For wireless communications you will need to purchase a PC Transmitter Each TEAM is supplied with four Miabots as above (3 players + 1 spare), plus: Debug cable. Program cable. Development software on CD Rom PC Transmitter

 
The VISION SYSTEMS consists of:

High quality CCD camera
Telephoto Lens
PC framegrabber card
Robot soccer vision recognition software and competition engine

You will need a 9V supply for the camera.

The KIT consists of:

Two complete robot soccer teams
1 x CCD Camera
2 x Framegrabber cards
2 x Robot Soccer Competition Engine Licenses
Pitch & interconnect cables not included.
