Introduction

There are as many ways to get started in robotics as there are ways of skinning the proverbial feline.
One of the main aims of this site is to help you choose your entry method and to make it as easy to carry it out as possible.

The simplest starting point is the Robot Kit - Such as the Elekit range - which give a good hands on introduction to many aspects of robotics - Mechanics - electronics - simple behaviours. All this is done with nimble fingers and the instructions. The most advanced of the range - PIMOT - allows you to programme it from a key pad on its back or from your PC.

Another method is via some of the books on robotics such as An Introduction to Robotics and others to be found in the same section. Some introductory books include a robot to build from simple card amd plastic (Inventers Hand Book - Robots) to Plastic Kits ( Robobug ) to new technologies ( Stiquito - the muscle wire ant )

The Edubot range of
programmable Arms

The student and the amateur have the luxury of time to investigate what they wish to a certain extent and to this end here are many books on all aspects of amateur robotics. Many of these concentrate on the Build your own Robot approach.

Many of these books give an introduction to the theory of the subject backed up by projects which can be built from off-the-shelf parts

On the other hand you may not want to build from scratch but just want to explore the possibilities with a pre-built robot. There are many on the market, mostly designed for the Education market, which allow you to program and experiment with a ready-built robot. The EduBot range are of this class in robot arm terms while the Miabot and the Airat2 are ready made wheeled robots which allow immediate programing

AIrat2 - Programmable maze solving robot - or make it what you will!

If you want to play with the vairious aspects of robotics technology then there are many choices here:-

> Muscle wires - shape memory alloy actuators
> Micro controllersand RC servos
> Air Muscles
> Mechanical structures

Airmuscle
Complient Low pressure
Pneumatic Actuators

The Amateur in Robotics

The term amateur is one which should not be sneered at in any way. The Amateur is one who is sufficently interested in his subject to go that bit further in the pursuit of knowlege and experience in his chosen subject.

With a subject like robotics which is growing so quickly there is much room for the amateur to follow a path which the established professonal may not have time or resources to do.

The books, hardware and software available allow the amateur to progress in their favoured path and together with the internet access to the rest of the robotics comunity they can become quite expert in a field or even create a new one.
