Shadow Robotics Ltd
The Air Muscle has the following characteristics which differ from pneumatic cylinders !

The Air Muscle is a low pressure actuator with a set of operational features unique in the field of robotics and automation

a) - Smooth jerk free motion from start to finish due to the complete lack of stiction, the feature of standard actuators which produces the characteristic jerk so well known in air operated devices.

b) - Compliance - Although they can produce the force needed to move a function the Air Muscle will also yield when an obstacle is encountered, thus preventing damage to the object and the "Arm" - a distinct advantage where robots mix with humans.

c) - Light weight - The materials from which the Air Muscle is made are non-metallic and give it a relatively high power-to-weight ratio - a critical feature in choosing an actuator for a mobile robot

The human hand has twenty-four powered movements.
Using Air Muscles Shadow have implemented every single one, with all the power and range of movement, that the human hand has.

Shadow Robotics Ltd
This is something which has never been done before and is mostly due to the unique characteristics of the Air Muscle actuator.

The Shadow Dexterous Hand/Arm uses Shadow Air Muscles to obtain all the movements of the human arm and hand.

Because of the very high power-to-weight ratio, all the actuators for the hand can be packed into the forearm.

The muscles in the upper arm and torso are analogous to the human's.

Shadow Robotics Ltd
The Hand is driven from a block of Air Muscles mounted behind the Hand on the "forearm" using Pneumatic valves and initial control software . The joints are driven by an opposing pair of muscles, permitting variable compliance at the joint; however, some of the finger joints are driven by a single muscle with return spring.
